grandma's recipes

grandma liked food.
occasionally i'd open an envelope from her and receive a recipe she'd handwritten on an index card.
she would underline or highlight important parts of the recipe and in the corners she might add "this is one of my favorites" or "i like this".
my sister has some, too.
anyone else receive them from time to time?
here is a recipe i now keep in my recipe box that came from her long ago.

heavenly chocolate cake
3 greased 8" pans (bakes 20 min) or 2 greased 9" pans (bakes 25-30 min).
preheat oven to 370 degrees.

1/2 T vinegar
1/2 c evaporated milk
1/2 c soft butter
1 lb brown sugar (2 1/2 c packed)
2 eggs unbeaten
2 squares chocolate-melted
2 t vanilla
1/2 t salt
2 1/4 c cake flour (3 T less regular)-sifted
1 c boiling water
2 t baking soda

add vinegar to milk stir and set aside.
cream sugar and butter until fluffy.
stir in chocolate, soured milk, vanilla and salt.
gradually add flour-beat smooth after each addition (about 1/3 each addition)
last dissolve baking soda in boiling water-stir into batter.
pour very thin batter into greased cake pans and bake.
cool cake on wire rack.

4 c sifted powdered sugar
1/2 c soft butter
1 t vanilla
6-8 T evaporated milk

beat well to mix, frost cake once cooled.
